McLaughlin Named to MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List
CCSU's Roma McLaughlin was among the list of 54 named to the watch list for the most prestigious individual award in college soccer.
Junior Roma McLaughlin of the Central Connecticut women's soccer team was named to the 2020-21 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List it was announced by the United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club on Thursday. The MAC Hermann Trophy, presented by World Wide Technology, is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's award winners will be announced May 27 at the 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy Press Conference and Banquet taking place at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, MO.
McLaughlin became the first Blue Devil to earn All-America honors when she was named to the United Soccer Coaches Division I Women's Soccer All-America Second Team following the 2019 season. McLaughlin was also a United Soccer Coaches All-North Region First-Team selection, the 2019 Northeast Conference Midfielder of the Year and a First Team All-Conference choice for the second straight year. In 36 career games she has posted 32 points on 12 goals and eight assists.
"It's great to see Roma recognized as one of the best players in the country," said CCSU head coach Mick D'Arcy. "She works incredibly hard in every practice and is continually making herself a better player."
As a sophomore, McLaughlin led the Blue Devils with 23 points and 10 goals. She finished second in the NEC in points, goals, and game-winning goals. Nationally, she finished in the top 100 in four categories, goals per game (60th, 0.56), total goals (77th, 10), points per game (88th, 1.3) and total points (99th, 23). She scored four goals against non-conference opponents including the game-winner against Iona and the lone goal in a 1-1 tie against Siena. In conference play, McLaughlin scored four goals in three matches scoring twice against Wagner and Merrimack.
She led Central to its second straight NEC Title with a 1-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 10 when she scored the game-winning goal and secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the postseason, Central upended Rutgers in the NCAA Tournament First Round before falling to West Virginia in double-overtime.
