The Blue Devils upset the four-seeded Rutgers in the first round of the tournament last Friday. It was the first time since 2015 that a single seeded team fell in the first round.
The game was scoreless until the 88th minute when junior Erica Bardes sent the ball from the left side of the box that went in the top right corner of the net for the game winning goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda McQuillan had 11 saves in the net for Central. CCSU previously fell to the Knights 2-1 in overtime on opening night of the season. In both gams against Rutgers, McQuillan totaled 19 saves.
This will be the third ever meeting between the Blue Devils and the Mountaineers, with West Virginia leading the series 2-0. The teams last met 19 years ago in 2000, which West Virginia won 2-0. The first time the Blue Devils faced West Virginia was Oct. 10, 1998 (L, 2-1).
The Mountaineers enter the contest at 11-7-2 overall and 5-3-1 in the Big 12 conference. West Virginia fell to Kansas 2-0 in the Big 12 Championship and defeated Georgetown 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last Saturday.
