Women's Soccer Drops 3-1 Decision in NCAA Championships at Georgetown
Blue Devils end the season with a 16-2-2 overall record
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team saw their magical season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-1 loss on the road at Georgetown on Saturday. The loss ends the season for the Blue Devils with a 16-2-2 overall record, the second-highest single season win total in school history.
Georgetown advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and is now 18-0-3 on the season.
The Blue Devils led 1-0 at halftime on the 11th goal of the season from senior Danielle Pearse. Pearse, the Northeast Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring three times in two games, took a feed from freshman Roma McLoughlin and sophomore Brianna Williams to give the Blue Devils the lead at 19:06.
Each team had three shots in the first half. Centra's senior goalkeeper Ashley Cavanaugh made a pair of saves to keep the Hoyas off the scoreboard before halftime.
The Hoya offense had several opportunities to tie the game early in the second half but Cavanaugh made a pair of outstanding saves to keep the score 1-0.
Georgetown finally got on the board with 20:27 left in the second half when Paula Germino-Watnick found the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. She took a pass from Kyra Caruso and scored to even the score.
The Hoyas took a 2-1 lead on a goal from Amanda Carolan with 12:13 to play. The scored again minutes later when Caruso took a penalty kick, hit the post, and fired the rebound past Cavanaugh for the 3-1 lead with 10:34 to play.
Cavanaugh finished the game with five saves, three coming in the second half.
The Blue Devils end their season with a 16-2-2 overall record.
