Blue Devils Earn Ninth Regular Season Title on Senior Night
CCSU shutout Mount St. Mary's 4-0.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team earned its seventh straight victory after shutting out Mount St. Mary's 4-0 on Friday night. Freshman Roma McLaughlin scored her first two collegiate goals.
With the win, the Blue Devils will host the 2018 Northeast Conference Tournament. This marks the eighth outright regular season title for Central, the last being in 2009.
CCSU improves to 13-1-2 and 7-0 in the NEC. Mount St. Mary's falls to 3-8-3 overall and 2-2-2 in conference play.
Junior Shauny Alterisio opened scoring at the 7:42 minute mark off a 40-yard free kick. The long shot bounced over the keeper's head to put CCSU up 1-0. It was the co-captain's first goal of the season.
In the second half, senior Charlotte Maurer would find classmate Danielle Pearse just outside the box when she lofted the ball to the top left corner of the net, making the score 2-0.
McLaughlin recieved a pass from Maurer just outside the box and sent the ball high over the keeper's head to score her first collegiate goal increasing the lead 3-0 at the 53:32 minute mark.
Less than two minutes later McLaughlin would score again ripping the ball to the bottom right corner of the net, pushing the lead 4-0.
Central finished with a 14-6 edge in shots. Senior Ashley Cavanaugh finished with three saves in goal for the Blue Devils recording her 10th shutout of the season. Maggie Barron finished with four saves for the Mountaineers.
CCSU returns to action Friday, Oct. 26, when it travels to Saint Francis University for its final regular season match. The Northeast Conference Tournament will be played on Nov. 2 and Nov. 4, times to be determined.
