Atkinson Scores in 1-0 Victory over Sacred Heart
Tess Atkinson scored her second goal of the season two help the Blue Devils defeat Sacred Heart
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team beat Sacred Heart 1-0 on Friday night in New Britain, CT. The golden goal came from sophomore Tess Atkinson, her second goal of the season. Tonight's win makes four in a row for the Blue Devils and the eighth shutout of the year.
CCSU advances to 10-1-2 overall and 4-0 in the NEC, Sacred Heart falls to 2-11-0 and 1-3-0 in conference play.
The Blue Devils had early looks at the goal from junior Yo Tachibana and freshman Roma McLaughlin, each having two shots on goal in the first half.
Central opened scoring in the second half at the 60:56 mark when senior Danielle Pearse gave Atkinson a touch pass from the right side of the field. Atkinson set a good ball in front of the net that bounced off a Sacred Heart defender and landed in the far left side of the goal.
CCSU would hold onto the lead for the rest of the game to settle the result. The Blue Devils finished with 19 shots, while the Pioneers finished with five.
Senior Ashley Cavanaugh made two saves in the goal for Central, recording her eighth shutout of the year. Sacred Heart's goalkeeper, Nicole Sambuco finished with 11 saves.
Central returns to action on Friday, Oct. 12 when it takes on Bryant University at 4 p.m. in New Britain, CT.
