Maurer Scores for Women’s Soccer in 1-0 Win over Lafayette
The Blue Devils travel to Maine on Thursday, Sept. 13.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team beat Lafayette 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in New Britain, CT. Senior Charlotte Maurer tailed the only goal of the game, her fourth of the season. Today's win makes four in a row for the Blue Devils and the fourth shutout of the season.
CCSU improves to 5-1-1 on the season, while the Leopards fall to 3-4 overall.
The Blue Devils had a pair of early chances, with junior Yo Tachibana and sophomore Jenna Rae Covello each forcing a save in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
Sophomore Roma McLaughlin had the best chance of the opening period when she unleashed a shot from outside the 18-yard box that rang off the crossbar at the 20:27 mark.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring just after halftime when sophomore Erica Bardes sent a long cross in that deflected off the crossbar and fell to Maurer in front of goal, who buried her shot to make it 1-0 at the 45:26 mark.
Central would hold onto the lead for the rest of the game to settle the result. The Blue Devils finished with 18 shots, while the Leopards finished with eight.
Senior Ashley Cavanaugh made fives for CCSU in the game, including a stop of a shot by Krista Kissell when she came off her line to deflect the shot over the goal. Lafayette's goalkeeper, Maggie Pohl finished with six saves.
Central returns to action at 6:00 PM on Thursday, Sept. 13, when it travels to Maine.
