Women's Soccer Shuts Out Sacred Heart 1-0 Sunday

Junior Danielle Pearse headed in her third goal of the season in the games 43rd minute to propel the Central Connecticut women's soccer team to its first victory over a Northeast Conference opponent Sunday, Oct. 8 at Sacred Heart. Senior captain Brianna Scaldaferri earned her first assist of the season and third of her career on the cross to Pearse who waited inside the box for the game-winning header at Park Ave Field in Fairfield, CT.
Junior goalkeepr Ashley Cavanaugh recorded her fifth shutout of the season and tallied one save in the win. Cavanaugh improves to 5-6 in net for Central on the year.
CCSU advances to 5-7 on the season and 1-2 in the NEC while the Pioneers falls to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in the league. With the victory, the Blue Devils extend their winning streak against SHU to three games.
Trailing 1-0 out of the halftime gate, SHU fired away seven more shots than in the first half with a must-score mentality in mind. Melanie DaSilva took a game-high five shots for SHU.
The Blue Devil back line didn't allow a single Pioneer corner kick until three consecutive opporunities in the 82nd minute. Central finished the afternoon with shots led by freshman Erica Bardes and Pearse with two strikes on target apiece.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team will host Keystone State NEC members Saint Francis U. and Robert Morris this upcoming weekend at CCSU Socer Field. The Blue Devils will first face the Red Flash on Friday, Oct. 13th at 7:00 p.m. in a doubleheader with the men's soccer squad who play first against LIU Brooklyn at 4:00 p.m.
The Colonials will then take on Central on Sunday, Oct. 15 slated to start at noon.
