UConn Outlasts Women's Soccer 3-0 in CCSU Tournament Finale
Over 2,000 women's soccer fans gathered at CCSU Soccer Field in New Britain, CT on Sunday night.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team was unable to pull out a win at home against the Connecticut Huskies in front of one of the most memorable crowds CCSU Soccer Field has entertained with over 2,000 fans in attendance. The group from Storrs, CT walked away with a 3-0 victory over the Blue Devils to conclude the first CCSU Soccer Tournament in program history.
Harvard stole a 1-0 double overtime victory in the first game on Sunday, Sept. 3 over the St. John's Red Storm.
The Blue Devils, who were without their senior captain and three-time NEC Defender of the Year, Jennifer Cafferky, move to 2-3-0 on the season and the Huskies advance to 1-3-1 with their first win of the 2017 campaign.
UConn wasted no time at all putting themselves on the scoreboard in the game's sixth minute when junior defender Liane Keegans heaved a long throw-in into the center of the box where rookie Kess Elmore deflected in just the second goal of the season for the Huskies.
The Blue Devils plowed on the pressure for the remainder of the first period, maintaining possession for most of the first 45 minutes of action. Midway through the first half, Florida State transfer, junior Yo Tachibana out-ran a couple of Huskies and placed a perfect cross to an open sophomore Carla Jackson who nearly tied up the match with a hard strike that curved wide right.
With 35:13 on the clock in the second half, Elmore struck net again putting CCSU down 2-0. Junior Elena Santos slid a low cross along the right endline to a streaking Elmore in the center of the box who chipped in the Connecticut goal.
Central Connecticut fell behind 3-0 in the game's 61st minute when UConn's Viven Bell soared a corner kick in to Sabrina Toole who completed the play with a header.
The Blue Devils, resilient, made the Huskies scramble and created two empty net situations in the final 15 minutes, but were unlucky on both opportunities. Junior keeper, Ashley Cavanaugh made five total saves and is now 2-2-0 on the year.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team will take the field again in one week on Sunday, Sept. 10 at Navy. The game is slated to start at 1:00 p.m. at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, M.D.
