Cafferky Nets Thrilling Game-Winner, Lifting Women's Soccer Over URI 1-0
With just 39 seconds left in regulation, Cafferky scored the go ahead goal as CCSU defeated the Rams 1-0 Thursday.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer match at Rhode Island remained scoreless until the final minute of regulation when veterans Kelly Halligan, Jennifer Cafferky, and sophomore Shauny Alterisio connected for the game-winning goal over its Atlantic-10 opponent.
With 52 seconds on the clock Halligan drifted a well-placed corner kick towards Alterisio and Cafferky, standing at 5-10, who soared in a header past URI keeper to give CCSU the 1-0 as time expired. Alterisio was credited for the assist on the play.
The heroic goal was Cafferky's third game-winner and six of her career. Alterisio notched her second career assist. Junior goalkeeper Ashley Cavanaugh recorded her fifth career shutout and second straight of the season. The Blue Devils advance to 2-0, while Rhode Island falls to 1-2 overall.
Cavanaugh totaled six saves on the night. Cafferky and junior Yo Tachibana both fired a pair of shots to lead the Blue Devils. CCSU played 18 players in what was a complete team victory.
Next, Central will travel to Providence on Sunday, Aug. 27 for its third straight road contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Chapley Field.
