Women's Soccer Blanks UMass to Open the 2017 Season
Pearse posted a goal and an assist in season opening victory
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Cavanaugh posted her fourth career shutout as the Central Connecticut women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 3-0 road victory over UMass on Sunday. Cavanaugh made five saves in the win for the Blue Devils, who will be back in action next week on the road at Rhode Island.
Freshman Jenna Rae Covello wasted little time making in impact in her first collegiate game for the Blue Devils. Covello scored twice, including the lone goal of the first half, to help pace the Blue Devil offense.
Junior Danielle Pearse posted a goal and an assist in the victory.
Covello's first goal came at 35:29 of the first half. She took a pass from Pease and beat the UMass keeper to the top right corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Pearse added her goal on a cross from classmate Shelbie Carr at 71:18 and pushed the lead to 2-0. Covello's second goal came just 25 seconds later as the Blue Devils took the three goal lead.
Cavanaugh's five saves helped pace the Blue Devil defense. Central held a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Central will face another Atlantic 10 opponent on Thursday, Aug. 24 when they travel to Rhode Island to face the Rams at 7 p.m.
