Women's Soccer Shuts Out UMass Lowell, 4-0
The Blue Devils post third shutout of the season in victory.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team scored twice in each half to drop UMass Lowell, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at CCSU Soccer Field. The Blue Devils got a goal and two assists from senior Delaney Lancor and two more assists from sophomore Laura Casanovas Diaz to improve to 4-2-2 on the season.
Central opened the scoring after starting the attack on a throw in from deep in their own defensive zone. Casanovas Diaz played the ball ahead to junior Alysa Christo on the right wing who delivered a perfect cross to senior Charlie Branch at the far post who headed it home for the 1-0 lead at the 16:40 mark.
The Blue Devils doubled the lead with 6:51 to play in the half. CCSU took off on a counter attack after UMass Lowell failed to take advantage of a loose ball in the area. Lancor played a ball ahead to senior Claire Walsh who used her head to knock the ball forward and fought off a UML defender to slip a shot past the goalkeeper and make it 2-0.
CCSU tacked on two goals in a span of 1:17 in the second half. The first goal came at the 82:30 mark when Lancor and Casanovas Diaz worked a give and go just outside the 18-yard box. Casanovas Diaz poked the pass just out of reach of the goalkeeper and Lancor pushed her shot into the unprotected net for a 3-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, Lancor sent a low cross across the front of the goal from the right wing and found junior Brianne Casey for a 4-0 lead in the 84th minute.
Freshman Ashley Cavanaugh made four saves for her first collegiate shutout and victory. The Blue Devils finished with an 11-6 edge in shots.
Julia Schneider and Meghan LaPointe each had two saves for UMass Lowell, while sharing time in goal.
The Blue Devils return to action on October 4 when they host LIU Brooklyn at 3:00 p.m. on the CCSU Soccer Field.
