Kelley's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer
Sophomore Allison Kelley scored the only goal of the match, giving her team a 1-0 victory over Wagner.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team earned their first Northeast Conference victory of the season on Friday afternoon. Sophomore Allison Kelley delivered an unassisted goal in the 81st minute of play to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 win over Wagner. The win improves Central's record to 4-4-5 on the season and 1-2-3 in NEC play.
With ten minutes left in the match, the Blue Devils' corner kick went long past the goal, where Kelley took the loose ball and dribbled back towards the middle of the field. After faking her defender she launched a shot from twenty yards out that curved downward into the upper right corner of the net.
The score by Kelley proved to be the game winner as Wagner was unable to capitalize on a late corner kick opportunity.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nikola Deiter posted four saves in the match, including a pair to protect the lead in the final minutes. She improves to 4-4-5 in the net on the season. On the afternoon, the Blue Devils played solid defense and limited Wagner's ability to get quality shots.
The game was delayed for nearly 30 minutes because of lightning in the area of Arute Field. The delay occurred in the 20th minute of play.
The Blue Devils will return to action on Sunday against Long Island at Willow Brook Park. This year's seniors will be honored on the field before the match. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
