Freer's Late Goal Gets CCSU Even at Bryant
Central is now 0-0-2 in league action, junior Annie Freer ties the game in the second half
Junior Annie Freer scored her first goal of the season with 3:16 to play in regulation as the Central Connecticut women's soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime draw on the road at Bryant on Friday.
The draw is the second straight to open Northeast Conference play for the Blue Devils. They now post an overall record of 3-2-4 and a league mark of 0-0-2.
Central remains unbeaten in its last five matches, posting a 2-0-3 mark during that stretch.
Bryant wasted no time taking the lead in the game, scoring 48 seconds into the game on Central keeper Nikola Deiter. Alex Bengsten took a pass from Samantha Shaw and scored less than a minute into the game.
Deiter would recover, stopping the final seven shots on goal that she would face, including a pair on the final minutes. It marked the fourth double overtime draw of the season for the Deiter and the Blue Devils.
With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Freer scored her first goal of the season to tie the game and help send it to overtime. She took a cross from junior Cara Cavallari in front of the net and sent a header past Bryant's Lauren Viverito to knot the score 1-1.
Neither team was able to score in the two overtime periods. Each team had 19 shots in the match, but the Bulldogs had a 8-5 edge in shots on goal. Bryant had a 10-5 edge in corner kicks
With the draw Bryant is now 4-4-3 overall and 1-1-1 in league action.
The Blue Devils continue the road trip, heading to Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. They return home next Friday and Sunday, hosting St. Francis (PA) and Robert Morris. The match against the Red Flash will be Friday night at 7 p.m.
