Women's Lacrosse Picks Up NEC Win Over Robert Morris on Friday
Blue Devils will host St. Francis U on Sunday at 12 noon
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team picked up its first Northeast Conference victory of the season with a 11-8 home victory over Robert Morris on Friday afternoon. The Blue Devils posted a season-high in goals in the win, led by freshman Jenna Henningsen with a career-high four goals on the day.
Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Branthover picked up the first league win of her career in goal, making five saves in the win.
The Blue Devils are now 2-10 overall and 1-2 in Northeast Conference play. Robert Morris is 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the league with the loss. CCSU is back in action on Sunday hosting St. Francis U at 12 noon.
The Blue Devils got off to a fast start and took a 5-0 lead with 17:44 left in the first half. Senior Madison Hughes scored twice and classmate Elyse Malecki also scored as the Blue Devils took the early lead. Henningsen scored her sixth goal of the season, and then junior Marissa Soto scored her 11th goal of the season with 17:44 to play before halftime to push the lead to 5-0.
The Colonials got on the board with 17:25 left to cut the lead to 5-1. Sophomore Kylie Sullivan scored her sixth goal of the season to give the Blue Devils a 6-1 lead just over a minute later.
Henningsen's second goal made it 7-1, and following an RMU goal, she scored again to give Central an 8-2 lead with under a minute to play. The goal was her third of the game. Soto's second goal of the game made it 9-2 at the half.
The Colonials scored the first two goals of the second half to cut the Blue Devil lead to 9-4 with 24:25 on the clock. Sullivan's second goal of the game for the Blue Devils, and her seventh of the season, made it 10-4 in favor of the Blue Devils. The 10th goal gave the Blue Devils a new season-high.
The Colonials responded with four straight goals to cut the Blue Devil lead to 10-8 with under six minutes to play in the game.
The Blue Devils were able to withstand the late Robert Morris run and hand on for their first league victory of the season. Henningsen's fourth goal came with four seconds left in the game to secure the win.
Henningsen led the Blue Devils with her four goals on the day. Hughes had a pair of goals to go along with two assists, as did Sullivan. Soto had two goals and one assist in the game.
The Blue Devils will host St. Francis U at 12 noon on Sunday, and will celebrate Senior Day. CCSU will honor its three members of the Senior Class prior to the beginning of the game.
