Blue Devils Open League Play With Loss at Wagner
CCSU travels to Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team opened the 2016 Northeast Conference season with a 15-4 road loss at Wagner on Friday. Three separate Blue Devils scored in the game, but the Blue Devils are now 1-9 overall on the season and 0-1 in NEC play.
Wagner scored the first six goals of the game before Central senior Elyse Malecki put the Blue Devils on the board off a pass from classmate Madison Hughes with just over a minute to play before halftime. Wagner added a goal before the break to take a 7-1 lead.
The Seahawks continued to produce on the offensive end of the field, scoring the first eight goals of the second half to build their lead to 15-1 with 11 minutes left in the game.
The Blue Devils scored the final three goals of the game, including a pair from junior Marissa Soto, to cut the lead to 15-4. Senior Falynn McCartney added a goal and an assist in the second half for the Blue Devils.
Freshman Jackie Branthover made 11 saves in goal for the Blue Devils in the loss. Classmate Diana Lenares played the 7:15 of the game but did not make a save.
Wagner (3-7, 1-0 NEC) was led by Taylor Pastore, Gretchen Fay and Kimmy Tumolo who each scored three time in the game.
The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday on the road at Mount St. Mary's beginning at 12 p.m.
