Manhattan Tops Women's Lacrosse on Arute Field on Wednesday
Blue Devils back in action on Sunday at 12 p.m. vs. LaSalle
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team dropped to 0-5 on the season with a 9-8 loss to Manhattan on Wednesday. The Blue Devils are now 0-5 on the season. Manhattan improves to 4-4 with their second straight win. Junior Marisso Soto scored three goals for the Blue Devils in the loss.
Central will play three more non-conference games, including two straight at home, before opening Northeast Conference play. The Blue Devils host LaSalle this Sunday, Mar. 20, at 12 p.m.
Manhattan led 5-1 with under 12 minutes to play in the first half before the Blue Devils scored two straight goals to cut the lead to 5-3 with 9:41 to play before the break.
Senior Madison Hughes scored her second goal of the game and then assisted on a goal from classmate Falynn McCartney to cut the lead to two.
The Jaspers had taken a 3-0 lead early in the half before Hughes scored her first goal of the game. It was her third multi-goal game of the season and her second straight after scoring twice in the home opener last weekend.
After Manhattan made it 6-3 Soto scored her second goal of the season to cut the lead to 6-4 with under three minutes to play before halftime.
Soto scored her second goal of the game to cut the lead to 6-5 to open the second half. The run for the Blue Devils reached 3-0 on the second goal of the game from McCartney and the game was tied 6-6 with 26:11 to play.
Manhattan scored two straight, including the second goal of the game from Megan Yarusso, to retake the lead 8-6 with under 15 minutes to play. Yarusso scored again, her third, with just over 10 minutes to play to push the advantage to 9-6 for the Jaspers.
Sophomore Kylie Sullivan scored her second goal of the season with just over three minutes left to cut the lead to 9-7. Soto's third goal with 1:32 cut the lead to 9-8.
Freshman goalkeeper Jackie Branthover made 10 saves in goal for the Blue Devils in the loss. It was her third straight game with 10 or more saves and her fourth on the season.
Soto scored three goals and Hughes added a pair of goals and two assists. McCartney had a pair of goals in the Blue Devils in the loss.
The Blue Devils will return to action at home on Sunday at 12 p.m. hosting LaSalle on Arute Field in New Britain.
