LIU Tops CCSU With Late Goal
Hooker scores three goals to lead CCSU offense
LIU Brooklyn scored a late goal with four seconds left to break an 8-8 deadlock and come away with a 9-8 victory at Central Connecticut in women's lacrosse on Friday night. Sophomore Tori Shinkowitz scored the game-winner after the Blackbirds held the ball for much of the final 15 minutes of the second half.
With the win LIU is now 6-5 overall and 2-0 in Northeast Conference play. The Blue Devils fall to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in league action.
The game was tied 5-5 at the half and the teams traded goals to begin the second half of play. The Blackbirds scored first on a goal from Brittany Rader to make it 6-5, and the Blue Devils answered with the second goal of the game from sophomore Alexandra Hooker to tie the game 6-6.
Hooker scored again less than a minute later to make the score 7-6 in favor of the home team, before Rader scored again for LIU with 20:46 on the clock to tied the game 7-7.
Junior Madison Hughes answered for the Blue Devils, taking the ensuing faceoff and going the length of the field to score and take an 8-7 lead. The Blackbirds tied the game on the third goal of the half from Rader with 15:34 on the clock, making it 8-8.
After the Blackbirds gained possession they began to slow down the game, holding the ball for over five and a half minutes without attempting a shot. Finally, a Blackbird shot went wide and the Blue Devils were able to gain possession.
After a shot by the Blue Devils and a save by Blackbird goalkeeper Alexis Maldonado, LIU took possession with just over five minutes to play in the game. They called two timeouts, the second one coming with 20 seconds on the clock, before Shinkowitz scored the game-winner with four seconds to play.
Central was led by Hooker show had a team-high three goals in the game. Hughes scored two goals and had a pair of assists, while sophomore Erin Dougherty had a goal and an assist in the loss. Senior Morgan Tullar had seven saves for the Blue Devils in the loss.
Central returns to action on Sunday on the road at Sacred Heart beginning at 1 p.m.
