Women's Basketball Falls to Sacred Heart on Saturday Afternoon

KEY MOMENTS 

• Sacred Heart started the contest with a 9-0 run after Ny'Ceara Pryor cashed in a layup with 6:57 left in the first. The Blue Devils scored at the 6:48 mark when Alonna Sellers made a basket after being fouled but could not convert on the free throw. Ally Sentance made a layup plus a foul; her free throw was rebounded by Sellers who scored to cut SHU's lead to 11-6 with 6:13 left in the first. Central outscored Sacred Heart 19-11 in the rest of the quarter and trailed the Pioneers 20-19 at the end of the first.  

• Ny'Ceara Pryor scored Sacred Hearts' third unanswered basket of the second quarter with 7:39 left giving her team a seven-point lead (26-19). Samora Watson corralled a miss and scored with 5:46 left cut The Pioneer lead to 27-23 in the second quarter. Sierra Johnson made a layup with 2:14 left that gave SHU a 35-26 lead. The Blue Devils held Sacred Heart scoreless for the remainder of the quarter. Meghan Kenefick hit a mid-range jumper and two Amaya Williams free throws ended the first half with Central trailing SHU 35-30.  

• Sacred Heart took their largest lead of the game after nine unanswered points to start the third quarter. Sajada Bonner nailed a three for SHU with 8:37 left in the third that gave them a 44-30 advantage. Ciera Pearson and Amaya Williams hit back-to-back threes to chip into the Pioneer lead (44-36) with 7:05 left in the quarter. Samora Watson made a layup with 4:37 left in the third to make the score 47-40. A jump shot from Watson with 2:04 left cut the SHU lead to 47-44. Ny'Ceara Pryor scored twice to give Sacred Heart a 51-44 lead going into the fourth quarter. 

• Samora Watson cashed in a layup fifteen seconds into the final quarter that cut Sacred Hearts lead to 51-46. SHU led 59-50 after Sierra Johnson made a layup with 5:43 left in the quarter. The Pioneers outscored The Blue Devils 23-5 to end the game with a 73-55 victory at the Detrick Gym.  

NOTES 

• The Pioneers lead the all-time series, 31-13. The Blue Devils have dropped their last two vs Sacred Heart. 

• Despite Sacred Heart shooting 50.0% (4-8) from three and scoring 20 points off CCSU turnovers in the first half, the Blue Devils only trailed 35-30 after 20 minutes of play. 

• Central Connecticut falls to 5-8 and currently ranks 5th in the NEC standings. CCSU needs a win Thursday night to clinch a playoff berth.
