Women's Basketball Suffers Tough Loss at Morgan State

The Central Connecticut Blue Devils lead for over 35 minutes but a crucial last 1:00 of the fourth quarter led to a 68-65 defeat in Baltimore on Wednesday.

KEY MOMENTS

• Samora Watson started the Central scoring with a contested pull-up jumper at the 8:37 mark in the first. Central took an early 19-9 lead with 2:56 left in the quarter but a 7-2 run from Morgan State ended the quarter 22-16.
• Central Connecticut took their largest lead of the game when Samora Watson converted an and one with 5:37 left in the second quarter extending Central's lead to 32-22.
• Morgan State ended the quarter with another 7-2 burst, bringing them within 5 at the half (37-32 CCSU).
• The Blue Devils scoreless for the first 2 minutes of the second half as the Central lead quickly dwindled before senior Meghan Kenefick hit a three-ball at the 7:57 mark to keep Central up 40-35.
• Morgan State guard Amari Smith tied the game at 43 for the Bears on a three-ball with 4:01 remaining in the third quarter. The Blue Devils and Bears traded baskets until Meghan Kenefick drained a triple with 0:32 seconds left to give CCSU a 54-52 advantage going into the final quarter. 
• CCSU went on a 9-2 run to start the fourth quarter to take a  lead 63-54 midway through the final stanza. 
• The Bears got hot and went on an 8-0 run to bring them within one (65-64) with 1:13 left in the fourth quarter. Amaya Williams ended the drought with a basket to give Central a 65-62 lead with 1:06 left to play. 
• Morgan State connected on two straight baskets and took a 66-65 lead with 6.8 seconds left in the quarter. The Blue Devils advanced the ball to half-court with 6.8 seconds left to go, but an offensive moving screen would be called before Kenefick could inbound the ball. Central was forced to foul and Morgan State came out with a 68-65 victory.

2 - Samora Watson notched her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Notably, she had nine rebounds and double-digit points in two other contests. 

NOTES

• Morgan State now leads the all-time series, 2-1, and starts a one-game win streak vs Central.  
• CCSU hit 4 first-half threes, their most in a half this season, that helped put Central on top 37-32 at the half. 
• Belle Lanpher led Central's first-half scoring with 11 points and Samora Watson had 10 points and led the Blue Devils with seven boards in the first act of Wednesday night's matinee.  
• Central had four players in double figures with Belle Lanpoher and Samora Watson leading the Blue Devils with 17 points a piece. 
• Meghan Kenefick added 13 on 6-of-9 shooting and Amaya Williams tallied 12 points to round out Central's scoring.
