Women’s Basketball Earns First Win Over Morgan State, Monday
The Blue Devils return home on Saturday, Dec. 1 against Buffalo.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team got its first win of the season after defeating Morgan State 60-36 on Monday night inside Hill Field House in Baltimore, MD. Sophomore Ashley Berube led the Blue Devils with 10 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.
CCSU improves to 1-4 overall, while Morgan State falls to 1-7.
Senior Andi Lydon opened scoring for the Blue Devils hitting back to back three-point shots to start the game. Berube protected the paint for Central with two blocks to help CCSU have a 15-7 lead at the end of the first. Both teams struggled to score in second quarter with both shooting below 25 percent from the floor.
At the 6:12 mark, senior Sydney Hines made the first basket of the second quarter for Central on a fade-away layup. CCSU held Morgan State to just 15 first half points but allowed them to grab 9 offensive rebounds. Sophomore Tiffany Slicklein provided a first half spark for CCSU after completing a three-point play.
Central led 24-15 at the half shooting .333 percent from the field as well as behind the arc. Morgan State shot .161 percent in the half and .625 percent from the foul line in the first 20 minutes of play.
Out of the halftime gate, Morgan State went on 5-0 run with back to back shots from Ashia McCalla. Central responded when Patterson found Berube on the block for an easy layup. Junior Ashley Chin grabbed a rebound and took it coast to coast to extend Central's lead 38-25. CCSU attacked the basket and got good looks at the rim. Sophomore Emma McCamus and junior Bruna Vila Artigues, along with Berube, had six points apiece in the third.
Despite full court pressure by the Bears, the Blue Devils held onto the lead after shooting 4-7 (.571 percent) from three-point range in the last 10 minutes of play.
Lydon had a solid all-around game with nine points, six rebounds, three steals, and two assists for Central. Artigues scored a career-high six points and dished a career-high three assists.
Adre'onia Coleman led the Bears with 14 points and five rebounds and Ashia McCalla, who scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds.
