Blue Devils Edged by Stony Brook, Sunday
Three Blue Devils scored in double figures.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team came up short at Stony Brook 60-55 on Sunday inside Island Federal Credit Union Arena. The Blue Devils saw three players in double figure scoring led by junior Andi Lydon with 14 points and added seven rebounds and three steals. Junior Kiana Patterson posted 13 points and CCSU knocked down six three-pointers in the game.
Stony Brook (7-4) out-rebounded the Blue Devils (0-10) 49-28 including 22 offensive boards and registered 38 points in the paint. CCSU shot 18-of-54 (.333) and the Seawolves struggled from behind the arc, hitting just 2-of-19 (.105)
The first half of Sunday afternoon's contest featured 10 lead changes between CCSU and Stony Brook. In the first quarter the Blue Devils went on an 11-5 run that was ignited from graduate student Morgan Johnson's 3-for-3 effort from the charity stripe after getting fouled on a three-pointer. The Blue Devils led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blue Devils held Stony Brook to just 32 points, the least points allowed by an opponent in the first half all season. CCSU trailed by three 32-29 at the break.
CCSU connected on three trifectas in the opening half and Patterson paced the team in points with 11. Stony Brook, who averages 5.7 more rebounds than its opponents per 40 minutes, used their athleticism and size to hold a 24-11 advantage on the boards at the break.
After SBU opened the third quarter on a 4-0 run, junior Sydney Hines gave the Blue Devils a jolt at with a 6-0 run herself. Hines converted the old fashioned three-point play at the 7:11 mark in the third, and then knocked down a right-wing three on the following possession.
The Blue Devils out-scored SBU 14-13 in the final period including a pair of clutch three-pointers from Johnson and Hines, but was unable to close the gap past four points in the closing minutes.
Cheyenne Clark of Stony Brook notched a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds, 11 of which were offensive. India Pagan chipped in 11 points.
Johnson didn't miss a shot during the game and finished with a mark in every scoring column: six points, three rebounds, three assists, and one block and steal. Hines ended the day with a season-high 11 points and three steals.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team will conclude its 2017-18 non-conference slate on Thursday, Dec. 22 on the road at Vermont. The Blue Devils will face off against the Catamounts inside Patrick Gymnasium at 11:00 a.m. on ESPN 3.
