Goode Nets Career-High, Women's Basketball Topped by ACC Opponent, Syracuse
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team was topped by ACC opponent, Syracuse, 95-63, on Sunday at the Carrier Dome.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team was stopped by #20/21-ranked Syracuse, 95-63, on Sunday at the Carrier Dome. CCSU was outrebounded, 59-28, including 33 offensive boards for the Orange. Freshman Taylor Goode led the Blue Devils in scoring with a career-high 14 points. CCSU's record moves to 1-6 on the season, while Syracuse increases their record to 6-3.
Central has a quick turnaround as they travel to Virginia Tech to take on the Hokies Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
Syracuse jumped out to a 10-0 lead, until sophomore Andi Lydon got the Blue Devil offense rolling hitting a jumper at the foul line against SU's zone defense. CCSU forced five Orange turnovers, and cut the lead to 13-8, at the first media timeout.
Freshman Taylor Goode hit a deep buzzer-beater at the end of the first quarter, to make the score 25-15, through 10 minutes of action. Central opened the game shooting 7-17 (41.2%), and SU converted on 9-19 (47.4%) from the floor.
Syracuse seniors Alexis Peterson and Brittney Sykes maintained the Syracuse lead in the first half combining for 27 points, on 11-21 (52.3%) shooting. Both teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter, with Central tallying 18 points compared to the 'Cuse's 20 points.
Syracuse let it fly from downtown, attempting 24 three's, but only knocking down six (14.3%) of them. CCSU was forced into 12 first half turnovers by SU's three-quarter court extended pressure, while the Blue Devil's caused their ACC opponent to lose the ball nine times.
The Blue Devil bench outscored Syracuse's 31-7 for the game, and Central had its best shooting percentage overall, 41.9% (26-62).
In the third period, Syracuse set the tempo out of the halftime gate, going on a 7-3 run to start, and did not let off the gas pedal. Sykes notched a double-double in points and rebonds with, 26 and 14, respectively. Fellow senior point guard, Peterson, also recorded a double-double in points and assists, scoring 26 and dishing out 10 dimes.
The Central offense settled down in the final period, scoring on six consecutive trips. Goode scored on back-to-back trips in transition, prior to Lydon and Epps helping themselves to a couple of baskets.
Andi Lydon sunk 10 points, grabbed four boards, had a career-high three steals, and one assist. Aleah Epps contributed 10 points and distributed four assists.
The Blue Devils will face the Virginia Tech Hokies for the first time in program history on Dec. 7, Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, V.A.
