Piper and Watras Interview with Sam Dostaler
"It's a huge honor because it didn't just come from the coaches, it came from my teammates," Watras told NECFrontRow.com's Sam Dostaler on Monday. "We have talked a lot as a team that we are all leaders this year and not just one person can take that role."
"Kaley's a senior and she has played a lot of minutes, even as a freshman she got playing time. She has three years of experience coming into this season. She knows what we expect and she has been there for the young kids when they have questions. I think [the younger players] look to her for answers," Piper said on Monday. "We left it up to the team this year with picking captains and they unanimously picked Kaley."
Piper also noted that the Blue Devils will select a "weekly captain" each Friday throughout the course of the season. That person will also be selected by the team.
Watras enters her senior season with career totals of 694 points, 245 rebounds, 204 assists and 110 steals.
The Blue Devils will open the 2014-15 season on Friday night against Hofstra. CCSU will open at home on Nov. 17 by hosting the University of Hartford at Detrick Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. against the Hawks.
