Bailey Signs NLI, Set to Join CCSU Women's Basketball for 2009-10 Season

Central Connecticut women's basketball head coach Beryl Piper announced the addition of Bacon Academy's Brooke Bailey to her 2009-10 recruiting class. Bailey, a 6-1 combo guard from Colchester, CT, signed her national letter of intent to become a Blue Devil this fall. She is the third student-athlete to sign with the program, joining Kirsten Daamen and Jameilia Dillon.

Central Connecticut Ends Historical Season with First Round WNIT Loss at Boston University

Appearing in postseason play past a conference tournament for the first time in its history as an NCAA Division I program, Central Connecticut (18-14) lost, 79-60, against Boston University (25-7) in WNIT first round action at Case Gymnasium. The Blue Devils, who have the best turnaround in the nation this season, were led by sophomores Kerrianne Dugan and Leanne Crockett and freshman Shontice Simmons. Dugan had her second double-double of the season, posting 16 points and 11 rebounds. Crockett and Simmons each added 17 points.

Women's Basketball Headed to Boston University for WNIT First Round Action

Central Connecticut will face Boston University on Thursday, March 19 in the Postseason Women's National Invitational Tournament. The Blue Devils, who are currently 18-13, earned the Northeast Conference's automatic berth after finishing second during the regular season. The WNIT appearance is Central Connecticut's first during its NCAA Division I history. The Blue Devils had not been selected for play past conference tournament action until this season. The game time for Thursday will be announced when it becomes available.

Women's Basketball Drops NEC Semifinal Decision to St. Francis (PA) on Saturday Afternoon

The second seeded Central Connecticut women's basketball team dropped a 73-62 decision to third seeded St. Francis (PA) in the Northeast Conference Tournament semifinals on Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, CT. The Blue Devils, now 18-13 overall this season, can earn a berth in the Postseason WNIT if Sacred Heart wins the NEC title next week. Freshman Shontice Simmons led the Blue Devils with 15 points. She also had seven rebounds. Freshman Gabrielle Oglesby and sophomore Leanne Crockett each added 13 points in the loss.

Dugan Selected Second Team All-NEC, Simmons Named to All-Rookie Team

Sophomore Kerrianne Dugan and freshman Shontice Simmons were each awarded postseason honors by the Northeast Conference this evening at the league's women's basketball banquet. Dugan picked up a second team All-NEC selection, while Simmons was named to the 2008-09 Northeast Conference All-Rookie Team. Dugan becomes just the fourth CCSU player to garner a selection on either the first or second team since the program joined the NEC in 1997-98. Simmons, meanwhile, is the sixth Blue Devil in seven seasons to earn a spot on the league's all-rookie team.

Balanced Effort Leads CCSU to Northeast Conference Semifinals, First Tournament Win in 11 Seasons

Seven players had six or more points for second seeded Central Connecticut (18-12) in a 62-51 Northeast Conference Tournament quarterfinal win over seventh seeded Fairleigh Dickinson (10-20). Sophomores Kerrianne Dugan and Leanne Crockett each scored 11 points for the Blue Devils, who earned a spot in Sunday's semifinals against third seeded St. Francis (PA).

Simmons and Wade Combine for 31 Points in CCSU's Regular Season Finale, Blue Devils Fall 67-51 Versus Monmouth

Central Connecticut (17-12, 12-6) ended its regular season with a 67-51 Northeast Conference home loss versus Monmouth (17-12, 11-7). Freshman Shontice Simmons led the Blue Devils with 17 points and eight rebounds. Junior P.J. Wade added 14 points and five boards in the defeat. Both players had two steals. CCSU will make its return to the Northeast Conference Tournament on Saturday, March 7. The Blue Devils, who last made it to the league tournament in 2005-06, will be the #2 seed. They play #7 Fairleigh Dickinson at 5:30 p.m. in the Pitt Center on the campus of Sacred Heart.

Simmons Guides Blue Devils in NEC Road Loss Versus Quinnipiac

Freshman Shontice Simmons had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists to lead Central Connecticut (17-11, 12-5) in a 79-68 Northeast Conference loss at Quinnipiac (17-10, 10-7). Sophomores Leanne Crockett, who made four three-pointers, and Kerrianne Dugan and freshman Gabrielle Oglesby each added 12 points for the Blue Devils.

Simmons Scores 18 in Northeast Conference Home Loss Versus Sacred Heart

Freshman Shontice Simmons had 18 points and six assists to lead Central Connecticut (17-10, 12-4) in an 81-62 Northeast Conference home loss versus Sacred Heart (20-7, 17-0). Freshman Gabrielle Oglesby and junior P.J. Wade each had 10 points in the loss. Despite the loss, CCSU collected the #2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The Blue Devils earned the second slot thanks to a 77-69 Monmouth win over Robert Morris in West Long Branch, NJ.

Dugan and Udenze Each Record Double-Double in 64-52 Blue Devil Home Win Over St. Francis (NY)

Sophomores Kerrianne Dugan and Justina Udenze each posted a double-double in a 62-54 Central Connecticut (17-9, 12-3) Northeast Conference home win over St. Francis (NY) (4-22, 3-13). Dugan had 15 points and 10 rebounds to collect her first double-double of the season. She also had six assists. Udenze added 16 points and 10 rebounds. It was the third straight double-double performance for Udenze. With the win, Central Connecticut matched its second-highest win total in the program's NCAA Division I history. The Blue Devils went 17-10 in 1997-98. The 12 NEC wins tie the most in school history. CCSU went 12-4 in 1997-98.

Blue Devils Celebrating Think Pink, Honoring Dr. Brenda Reilly at Saturday's Alumni Day

Central Connecticut will celebrate alumni day on Saturday, Feb. 21 when St. Francis (NY) comes to Detrick Gymnasium. The afternoon will also serve as Think Pink Day for the Blue Devils. In addition, head coach Beryl Piper and fellow alumni will honor their former coach, CCSU Hall of Famer Dr. Brenda Reilly. Reilly, the 1985-86 NCAA Division II Coach of the Year, served as the Blue Devil head coach from 1971 through 1995 and passed away on Aug. 5, 2000 following a battle with ovarian cancer.

Central Connecticut freshman Shontice Simmons was named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the week this afternoon. Simmons averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the Blue Devils.

Blue Devils Rally for 71-69 Road Win Over Fairleigh Dickinson, Simmons Scores Team-High 15 Points

Freshman Shontice Simmons had 15 points, including 10 in the second half, in a 71-69 Central Connecticut (16-9, 11-3) comeback win at Fairleigh Dickinson (9-16, 8-7). Simmons also had six assists and four rebounds. Sophomore Justina Udenze had her second straight double-double effort, totaling 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Leanne Crockett added 14 points and nine rebounds, while classmate Kerrianne Dugan had nine points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. With the victory, Central Connecticut secured its first winning season since going 14-13 in 2000-01.

Central Connecticut (15-8, 10-3) secured a spot in the Northeast Conference Tournament with a 70-67 overtime home win over St. Francis (PA) (9-14, 7-5). It is CCSU's first berth since the 2005-06 season. Freshman Shontice Simmons had 14 points to lead five Blue Devils in double figures. Junior P.J. Wade scored a career-high 27 points to lead Central Connecticut (14-8, 9-3) in a 76-63 Northeast Conference home win over Robert Morris (12-11, 8-3). Freshman Gabrielle Oglesby added a season-best 17 points in the win, CCSU's first against the Colonials since Jan. 15, 2005. The Blue Devils have now moved into sole possession of second place in the league standings.

Sophomore Leanne Crockett added 11 points, nine rebounds and six steals in the defeat, CCSU's first during league play this season. The loss also snapped a six-game Blue Devil winning streak.

Sophomore Kerrianne Dugan had 17 points to lead Central Connecticut (11-5, 6-0) in a 71-64 Northeast Conference win at St. Francis (PA) (3-13, 2-4). Dugan combined with freshman Shontice Simmons, junior P.J. Wade and sophomore Leanne Crockett to score 62 of the 71 Blue Devil points. Simmons had 16 points. Wade scored 15 points, and Crockett totaled 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds. CCSU has now won six straight for the first time since the 1997-98 season.

Crockett Collects Second Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week Honor

Central Connecticut sophomore Leanne Crockett earned her second Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week accolade of the season after leading the Blue Devils to three league wins. Crockett shot 64 percent from the field, including 62.5 percent from three-point range, to post 15.0 points per game.. The Manchester, CT product also averaged 7.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists.

Central Connecticut (10-5, 5-0) defeated Wagner (5-10, 1-4), 81-61, in Northeast Conference home action. It was the fifth straight win for the Blue Devils. Freshman Gabrielle Oglesby matched a season-high with 16 points, and classmate Shontice Simmons had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists in the victory. Sophomore Kerrianne Dugan added 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals for CCSU.

Sophomore Leanne Crockett had a season-best 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting to lead Central Connecticut (9-5, 4-0) in a 71-57 Northeast Conference home win over Fairleigh Dickinson (4-9, 3-2). Crockett, who connected on 5-of-7 three-point attempts, was aided by junior P.J Wade's second straight double figure scoring effort. Wade had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Blue Devils, who have won four straight for the first time since the 2000-01 season.

Udenze's Putback in Final Seconds Gives CCSU First Ever 3-0 Start in Northeast Conference Play

Sophomore Justina Udenze's putback with 1.8 seconds left gave Central Connecticut (8-5, 3-0) a 51-49 Northeast Conference road victory over Monmouth (5-9, 0-4). Udenze finished with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds. Junior P.J. Wade and sophomore Leanne Crockett led the Blue Devils with 13 points each. With the win, CCSU is now 3-0 in Northeast Conference play for the first time in program history.

Sophomore Kerrianne Dugan scored a season-high 22 points and had seven rebounds to lead Central Connecticut (7-5) in an 81-74 non-conference road win over Longwood (4-9). Freshman Shontice Simmons added 19 points, five assists and three steals for the Blue Devils, who shot 25-of-47 (53.2 percent) from the field and 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) on three-point tries. Sophomore Leanne Crockett contributed 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds in the win.

Central Connecticut (6-5) had four players score 10 points or more in an 83-63 non-conference home win over Colgate (3-10). Sophomore Kerrianne Dugan led the Blue Devils with a season-high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Sophomore Leanne Crockett added 13 points, and junior P.J. Wade had 12 points. Freshman Shontice Simmons contributed 11 points. CCSU made 33-of-62 shots (53.2 percent) and had 23 assists against 12 turnovers in the win.

Sophomore Justina Udenze had a career-high 17 points, but it was not enough for Central Connecticut (5-5) to overcome Fordham (5-6) in a 66-64 non-conference road decision at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx. Freshman Shontice Simmons added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Blue Devils.

Crockett Named Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week

Central Connecticut sophomore Leanne Crockett was named the Choice Hotels/Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week. It is the first honor for Crockett, who scored 17 points and had seven rebounds and four assists in CCSU's only action of the week, a 66-49 victory over Long Island. The Manchester, CT native's effort helped propel the Blue Devils to a 2-0 start against Northeast Conference opponents for the first time since the 2000-01 season.

Sophomore Trio Leads Blue Devils to 2-0 Start in Conference Play, CCSU Defeats Long Island 66-49

A trio of sophomores combined for 47 points to lead Central Connecticut (5-4, 2-0) in a 66-49 Northeast Conference road win over Long Island (4-5, 0-1). Leanne Crockett (17 points), Justina Udenze (16 points) and Kerrianne Dugan (14 points) led the Blue Devils to their first 2-0 start against league opponents since the 2000-01 season. The 5-4 overall record is also the best since that campaign. The three also combined to shoot 19-of-25 from the floor. Crockett made 6-of-9, including 3-of-4 from three-point distance. Udenze shot 7-of-9, and Dugan made 6-of-7.

CCSU Posts Largest Margin of Victory Versus NEC Foe in 10 Seasons, Defeats Mount St. Mary's 66-41

Central Connecticut (4-4, 1-0) opened its Northeast Conference season with a 66-41 home victory over Mount St. Mary's (3-3, 0-1). It was the largest margin of victory against an NEC foe since the Blue Devils defeated Long Island 68-38 on Jan. 25, 1999 in Detrick Gymnasium. Freshman Shontice Simmons led CCSU with 18 points. She also had five assists and five steals. Sophomore Kerrianne Dugan added 17 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals in the win.

Piper Inks Two NLIs for 2009-10 Central Connecticut Women's Basketball Season

Central Connecticut women's basketball head coach Beryl Piper announced two National Letter of Intent signings for the 2009-10 season. Piper and the Blue Devils will welcome a pair of post players in Kirsten Daamen and Jameilia Dillon to New Britain. Daamen is a 6-3 center from Merrimac, MA who plays at Pentucket Regional High. Dillon, meanwhile, is a 6-1 forward who hails from Pawtucket, RI and plays at the LaSalle Academy.

Oglesby Scores 16 Points in 68-52 Blue Devil Home Loss Versus Western Michigan

Freshman Gabrielle Oglesby scored a season-high 16 points to lead Central Connecticut (3-4) in a 68-52 home loss versus Western Michigan (2-4). The Blue Devils rallied from 21 points down at halftime to draw within three points of WMU, but the Broncos closed the game on a 23-10 run. Sophomore Leanne Crockett added eight points and 10 rebounds for CCSU.

Blue Devils Win Rhody Classic, Simmons Named Tournament's Most Outstanding Player

Central Connecticut (3-3) held off a late Rhode Island (3-3) rally to capture the Rhody Classic championship with a 66-58 win over the host Rams. Tournament MOP Shontice Simmons, who had 23 points in CCSU's 74-66 win over Cornell yesterday, finished with 15 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists in today's victory. Sophomores Leanne Crockett and Kerrianne Dugan joined Simmons on the all-tournament team.

Simmons Scores 21 Second Half Points to Lead CCSU in Comeback Win Over Cornell at the Rhody Classic

Freshman Shontice Simmons scored 21 second half points to lead Central Connecticut (2-3) from 11 points down at the break in a 74-66 win over Cornell (2-3) at the Rhody Classic. Cornell shot 57.7 percent from the floor, including 77.8 percent on three-pointers, to build a 41-30 halftime lead, but Simmons and the Blue Devils outscored the Big Red 44-25 over the final 20 minutes. Simmons finished with a game-high 23 points, while sophomore Kerrianne Dugan added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Blue Devils Picked 11th in Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team was picked to finish 11th in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll released this morning. Coming off a 4-25 season in her first year at the helm of the program, head coach Beryl Piper returns six players and welcomes six newcomers for the 2008-09 campaign. Robert Morris, the two-time defending NEC Champion, was picked to again repeat by the NEC coaches. Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart followed the Colonials in the poll.

Rachel Chandler, Verree Harris, Christie Leverette, Gabrielle Oglesby and Shontice Simmons will join the Blue Devil program for the upcoming campaign. Central Connecticut women's basketball head coach Beryl Piper added Liz Stich to her coaching staff for the 2008-09 season. A University of Hartford graduate, Stich spent last season at Longwood University in Farmville, VA. Stich's responsibilities at CCSU will include film exchange, scouting, recruiting and player development.

Women's Basketball Releases 2008-09 Schedule

Central Connecticut head coach Beryl Piper announced the 2008-09 women's basketball schedule this afternoon. The second-year head coach will lead the Blue Devils in 11 non-conference games and 18 Northeast Conference contests. They open the season with tournament play at the University of South Florida. The opening round game against the host Bulls on Saturday, Nov. 15 is one of three meetings with first-time opponents.
