Softball Defeats UHart in Home Opener

Central Connecticut State University defeated in-state rival the University of Hartford on Sunday afternoon, 1-0, at the CCSU Softball Field. Molly Bruyns drove in the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Jasmine Lasane from second base.

Central Connecticut State University defeated in-state rival the University of Hartford on Sunday afternoon, 1-0, at the CCSU Softball Field. Molly Bruyns drove in the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Jasmine Lasane from second base. 

Bruyns and Ashlyn Desaulniers both went 2-3 on the day. Kaylee Whittaker struck out four as she earned the complete game shutout victory.

KEY MOMENTS  

  • Desaulniers led off the game with a single inside the first base bag but was stranded at second after stealing the bag. 

  • UHart threatened in the top of the fourth, putting the first two runners on base before Whittaker fanned Mikayla Gordon and induced a fly out from Samantha Nagel and struck out Anita Farkash to get out of the inning without allowing a run. 

  • Kim Howard singled through the left side in the bottom of the fourth. 

  • Lasane pinch ran and stole second and came around to score on a single by Bruyns. 

  • UHart again put a runner on second, this time with one out in the top of the sixth. 

  • Again, Whittaker worked out of trouble, getting Gordon to line out to first and Grace Lawton flipped to shortstop for the inning ending double play. 

NOTES 

  • Whittaker held UHart 0-5 when they had runners in scoring position 

  • The Blue Devils didn't allow a Hartford base runner to reach third base in the game 

  • CCSU was 3-3 on stolen bases with two from Desaulniers and one from Lasane 

  • Central Connecticut is now 1-0 at home 

  • This is Central's first home opener win since 2018 when they beat Quinnipiac 11-1 on March 22nd. 

  • Today's game was the earliest home opener since the Blue Devils swept Yale March 5th, 2013
