Paige Stringer Named NEC Player & Rookie of the Week For Second Time
The freshman earned a pair of NEC accolades for her dominant week.
For the second time this season, freshman Paige Stringer of the Central Connecticut softball team was recognized as the Northeast Conference Player of the Week, as well as the Rookie of the Week on Tuesday. The Monroe, WA native had a batting average of .625, smashed four home runs, and drove in 11 runs in six games.
Stringer helped the Blue Devils win five out of six games, including a four-game sweep over Fairleigh Dickinson. At UAlbany, the freshman homered in the first inning of game one, giving CCSU a 3-0 lead. She finished the double header going 3-7 with a home run and two runs batted in. In the sweep over Fairleigh Dickinson, Stringer finished 7-9 (.777) and added six walks. She homered in the first inning of the final three games of the series, giving CCSU a 2-0 lead each time. In game one on Saturday, her first inning home two-run blast was the only hit for the Blue Devils, but proved to be enough for the victory. With the sweep, Central improved to 8-0 in NEC play for the first time since the 2015 season. Stringer leads the team in average (.357), home runs (7), and RBI's (19).
Pitcher Kaylee Whittaker was named a Northeast Conference Prime Performer. The sophomore dealt a complete game, allowing just one run and striking out six batters against Fairleigh Dickinson. She also earned her first career save, striking out the final batter in game two of the double header on Friday at FDU.
The Blue Devils host a four-game series with Bryant over the weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday's double-headers will be at 1:00 & 3:00 pm.
