Red Flash Take Game One, Game Two to be Played Monday
Due to weather conditions softball will play game two Monday morning at 11 a.m.
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped its third straight to the Red Flash of Saint Francis U on Sunday afternoon 12-6. Due to heavy rain game two will be played Monday morning at 11 a.m.
Central falls to 11-13 overall and 0-3 in the Northeast Conference, while Saint Francis U improves to 13-20 and 2-1 in league play.
Junior Giuliana Hathaway led the Blue Devils with a three-run homer and one run. Her homer came in the third inning along with the other three runs from Central on the game.
Freshman Carli Backlund got things going with a triple in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Sydney Bolan followed with a single-RBI to center field sending Backlund home and putting the Blue Devils up 1-0. A single from junior Alexa Milius gave Kristen Ulmer runners on first and second when she stepped up to bat. A hit up the left field line from Ulmer allowed rookie Alyssa Contreras, who pinch ran for Bolan, to score Central's second run of the game.
Junior Emily Cronin kept the momentum going with another single-RBI extending the lead 3-0. Hathaway's three run homer came next pushing Central's lead 6-0 before Saint Francis closed the inning with the final two outs.
In the top of the fifth, SFU had runners on first and third and a double-RBI put the Red Flash on the board cutting the lead 6-2. In the sixth inning SFU scored off another RBI cutting the lead 6-3.
The Red Flash dominated in the top of the seventh scoring nine runs off five hits. Six of their runs came while having two outs. Going into the bottom of the seventh, Central trailed 12-6.
SFU held the Blue Devils to just three hits after giving up six runs in the bottom of the third to pull out the comeback win.
Sophomore Ashley Antonazzo pitched 6.1 innings for Central throwing five strikeouts and allowing eight hits and eight runs. Freshman Carley Stoker finished the game allowing two hits and four runs.
