Boston U. Upends Central Connecticut on Wednesday
CCSU is back in action on Sunday, April 15 at Bryant for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games at Boston University on Wednesday, April 11. After falling the first game 10-1 in six innings, the Blue Devils gave the Terriers a run for their money in game two.
CCSU scored six runs on a torrent in the top of the sixth inning to send the game, tying the game at 9-9 and sending the game to extras. However, the rally was snuffed by a walk-off three-run homerun to seal the win for BU 12-9 in eight innings.
The Blue Devils are now 14-22 on the season and will next travel to Bryant on Sunday, April 15 to face the Bulldogs for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. Boston U. advance to 22-17 on the year.
GAME ONE
The Terrier built a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off three hits and a pair of walks from sophomore Blue Devil pitcher Peyton Silverman.
Seniors Brittany McNulla and Gianna Hathaway responded by leading of the top of the second inning with a single and double, respectively. With runners on second and third and no outs, fellow veteran Tori Constantin launched a sacrifice fly to left field that scored a tagging McNulla for CCSU first and only run of the contest.
Silverman and the Central defense held the Terriers scoreless in the second, third and fourth innings.
BU collected back-to-back singles in the bottom half of the fifth inning and was able to score one run off a sacrifice fly to left-center filed.
Trailing by three runs, 4-1, in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blue Devils would give up six runs to end the game an inning early.
Boston led off the inning with a solo homerun and loaded the bases with one out with BU's third and fourth hitters on deck. A costly Central Connecticut error on the next play would score two runners making the score 6-1. A three-run homer from Madi Killebrew would then seal the win for the home team.
Hathaway was 2-for-3 with her fourth double of her senior year to lead the Blue Devils. Silverman falls to 4-6 on the season with the loss.
GAME TWO
CCSU struck first in the second contest of Wednesday's doubleheader thanks to a RBI-double to left-center from McNulla.
The Terriers would combine to five runs in their first at bats that was sparked by a three-run dinger from Madi Killebrew with her second homer of the day. BU tacked on another run in the bottom of the second inning to extend its lead to 6-1.
Central Connecticut's senior center fielder Brittany Camara slugged her second triple of the season to right center in the top of the third, en route to scoring off a sacrifice fly from junior Kaitlin Paterson.
Paterson would then hit her first three-bagger of the year in her next at bat in the fifth inning to score Camara again, making the score 6-3.
The Boston crew recorded a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth making the score 8-3.
The Blue Devils laid on the gas in the top of the sixth inning, scoring six runs on three walks, one hit and one BU error to regain the lead 9-8. The Terriers Jilee Schanda then knotted the score on a solo homer to send the contest to extras.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Boston's Kaitlin Sahlinger ended the game on a three-run walk-off homer to right center.
Paterson totaled four RBI's, score twice and was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to lead CCSU. Camara went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
Senior Emily Sargent was credited with the loss, moving her record to 7-10 on the season.
