Boston College Inches Past CCSU 1-0 in Miami on Sunday
Senior Gianna Hathaway was a perfect 3-for-3 against the Eagles.
The Central Connecticut softball team lost a close game with Boston College on Sunday morning in the final game of the Florida Int'l Felsberg Invitational in Miami, FL. The Eagles prevailed 1-0 to advance to 5-9 on the season and CCSU dropped to 2-3 on the year.
Both teams collected four hits each and senior Gianna Hathaway was a flawless 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles against BC's ace Jessice Dreswick who posted 11 strikeouts in the game.
The Blue Devils went with senior Emily Sargent as their starting pitcher against the ACC opponent. Sargent gave up a pair of hits in the first two innings and held the Eagles scoreless.
In the top of the third inning Boston College's Gianna Randazza was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to the third on a pass ball and sac bunt. Sophomore Peyton Silverman came in to relieve Sargent and to face BC's lead-off hitter, Lexi DiEmmanuele. DiEmmanuele scored Randazza from third on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Trailing 1-0, CCSU left one runner on base in the fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth inning senior catcher Brittany McNulla picked off Chloe Sharabba who was attempting to steal second base to ending the inning and give Central momentum with the top of the batting order coming up.
Senior Brittany Camara singled to the left side of the diamond only to be caught stealing for the first out. Following a strike out, Hathaway singled to center and freshman Sydney Bolan reached on an error from the Boston College shortstop. The Blue Devils were unable to capitalize from the scoring opportunity, grounding out to second base.
Dreswick retired the Blue Devils in order in the bottom of seventh inning completing the game.
Silverman went 4.2 innings for CCSU and gave up just two hits, moving her record to 0-3.
Central Connecticut will travel back down south next weekend for the University of Arkansas Woo Pig Class in Fayetteville, AK on March 2-4. CCSU will face Northern Colorado and Arkansas for two games and Dartmouth for a solo contest in the tournament.
