Softball Hangs Tight With Michigan State on Saturday
CCSU fell 5-4 in the seventh inning to the Spartans.
Designated as the home team, Central Connecticut led the Michigan State Spartans 4-2 heading into the final inning on Friday night at FIU Softball Stadium after scoring all four runs in a huge second inning. With two outs and a huge upset over their Big Ten opponent in the sights of the Blue Devils, MSU went 3-for-3 with a double, single and the game-winning three-run homer to center field.
CCSU (2-2) fell 5-4 in the end after leaving two runners left on base in the bottom of the seventh to Michigan State (6-6).
Sophomore pitcher Peyton Silverman recorded her first complete game and moves her record to 0-2. The Spartans out-hit CCSU 11-9 for the game.
MSU's Caitie Ladd granted the first run of the ball game with a solo homer to left field in the top of the second inning.
CCSU's lead-off hitter, senior Brittany Camara rocketed a single to the left side of the field with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the second to score freshman Megan Dugas and tie the game at 1-1. Senior Lex Debrosse would then rip a double to the left center gap, sending home all three Central baserunners giving the Blue Devils a 4-1 edge.
Michigan State responded with a RBI sac fly in the top of the third to make it a 4-2 contest until the seventh inning.
With two runners in scoring position, the Spartans chose Kelcey Carrasco as the designated hitter in the do-or-die situation. Carrasco delivered the three-run jack on cue, leaving a chance for the Blue Devils in the bottom of the seventh.
After a quick fly out, senior Gianna Hathaway singled to short and freshman Sydney Bolan doubled to right field to put CCSU in a great position to tie the game.
However, Michigan State's reliever Kristinia Zalewski retired junior Kerri Dadalski and senior Brittany McNulla to conclude the game.
Camara, Hathaway and Bolan all went 2-for-4 to lead the Blue Devils at the plate.
The Central Connecticut softball team will face the ACC's Boston College on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 10:00 a.m. in its final game of the FIU Felsberg Invitational.
