Softball Wins 10-Inning Game Two Thriller, 5-2, Splits at Manhattan on Saturday
Junior Brittany McNulla went 4-for-5 in CCSU's 5-2 extra inning victory of Manhattan on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut softball team scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning in game two of Saturday's doubleheader with Manhattan winning, 5-2. Leading the way was junior Brittany McNulla who went 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI's. CCSU dropped game one earlier in the day 8-1 to the Jaspers.
CCSU improves to 10-20 overall and remains 4-6 in the Northeast Conference. Manhattan moves its record to 22-12 on the year.
GAME ONE
Sophomore Kerri Dadalski's sixth inning solo home run to center field was the only run that the Blue Devils would score in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Freshmen Emily Cronin, Kaleigh Edwards, and junior Tori Constantin all recorded hits for CCSU.
The Jaspers jumped out to a 7-0 start in the first two innings of the game and didn't look back. Junior pitcher Emily Sargent went all six innings in the circle for Central, struck out four batters, and moved her overall record to 5-16.
GAME TWO
Manhattan was the first to strike in game two, scoring one in the bottom of the first inning and one in the fourth. In the top of the third inning, junior Brittany Camara reach on a bunt down the third base line and continued to steal second. Classmate Brittany McNulla then found a hole in left field that scored Camara that cut the Blue Devils deficit to 2-1.
Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth, with the top of Central's lineup coming up to bat in a do or die scenario. Junior shortstop, Alexis Debrosse received a free pass to first base from Manhattan's pitcher, and stole second as the potential tying run. McNulla came in clutch yet again with a hard single to left field that scored the speedy Debrosse and knotted the score at 2-2.
Rookie Sarah Ogilvie, who relieved sophomore Alex Casañas at the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning, retired the Jaspers 1-2-3 at the end of regulation sending the game to extras. In the 10th inning, the Blue Devils broke out three runs on three hits to give themselves a 5-2 cushion. Constantin, McNulla, and rookie third baseman Alicia Bertolino all recorded singles for CCSU.
Ogilvie was credited with the win through six innings of work, improving her record to 2-3 during her freshman campaign. Casañas gave Central four solid innings in the circle.
CCSU out-hit the Jaspers of Manhattan 12-to-9. Constantin and Bertolino both chipped in two hits a piece, and freshman Kaitlin Paterson hit her seventh double of the season.
The Central Connecticut softball team will play next on Tuesday, April 18th at home in New Britain, CT against the Pirates of Seton Hall at 3:30 p.m.
