Softball Falls to Instate Rival UConn on Wednesday
The Central Connecticut softball team was out-hit 14-4 and fell 6-0 to the University of Connecticut on the road on Wednesday afternoon in Storrs, CT.
The University of Connecticut used a five-run fifth inning to top the Central Connecticut softball team, 6-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, CT. With the loss the Blue Devils fall to 10-16-1 overall on the year, while the Huskies improve to 14-24 with the victory. UConn out-hit Central 14-4 to claim the win.
The Huskies plated a run in the bottom of the first inning and then exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away from the Blue Devils and record a 6-0 victory over CCSU on Wednesday.
Alyson Ambler hit a one-out double to right-center field in the bottom of the first to score Kelli Bates all the way from first to give the Huskies the early 1-0 advantage after one inning of play.
CCSU's starting pitcher, freshman Alex Casanas, then settled in and blanked the Huskies over the next three innings, but they would eventually get to the rookie and tacked on five in the fifth to pull away for the win.
Following a bases loaded RBI single by Ryne Nakama to make 2-0 Huskies, UConn's Ally Hernandez delivered the knockout blow in the bottom of the fifth inning with a one-out grand slam to extend the lead to 6-0.
That would be all the run support Connecticut's starting pitcher, Chelsea Eckert, would need as she went on to limit the Blue Devils to four hits in a complete game shutout win. She struck out four and improves to 6-10 overall in the circle for the Huskies.
Casanas took the loss for the Blue Devils surrendering six earned runs on 12 hits and a pair of walks in five innings of work. She struck out one and falls to 4-10 overall on the season. Sophomore Emily Sargent pitched one scoreless inning in relief.
Freshman Kaitlin Paterson, sophomore Brittany Camara and senior's Eileen Purcell and Katie Schmidt accounted for the four hits for the Blue Devils, all singles.
Hernandez powered the Huskies at the plate finishing 2-for-2 with the home run and four RBI on the day. Ambler, Lexi Gifford and Dominique Pinto each logged multi-hit games for UConn in the win.
The Central Connecticut softball team will return to action next with a pair of NEC doubleheaders at home this weekend. They open up with two games against Mount St. Mary's on Saturday before playing a twin bill against Wagner on Sunday. First pitch of game one on Saturday in slated for 1 p.m. on the CCSU Softball FIeld.
