Bruno, Rentzel Named NCAA All-Regional
Junior Arielle Bruno and freshman Evie Rentzel were named to the NCAA Baton Rouge All-Regional team Sunday.
Central Connecticut softball junior Arielle Bruno and freshman Evie Rentzel were named to the NCAA Baton Rouge All-Regional Team on Sunday for their impressive performances in the Blue Devils' first ever appearance in an NCAA Regional tournament.
Bruno went three-for-seven at the plate over the weekend, including launching a solo blast over the left field wall to score against #10 LSU. She also belted a triple against Northwestern State on Saturday in the Blue Devils' 9-1 win. She scored three runs, stole two bases and exercised great discipline at the plate, earning four walks over the weekend. In Central's first game against LSU on Friday, the Blue Devils were struck out 15 times. Bruno struck out only once the entire weekend, registering a .429 batting average and a 1.143 slugging percentage. She also posted a .636 on base percentage.
Rentzel put on an impressive performance both at the plate and in the outfield. She went four-for-eight in the batter's box, scoring two runs and notching one RBI. The freshman also made several impressive diving catches in left field to register a total of 12 putouts on the weekend. Rentzel struck out only once over three games and posted a .500 batting average, .500 slugging percentage and a .556 on base percentage.
The weekend ends the Blue Devils' 2013 season and will go in the record books as the most successful season in the history of CCSU softball. For the first time in the 27 year division I history, the 2013 squad won an NEC Championship, made an appearance in the NCAA Regionals and won an NCAA Regional game.
