Gill, Trainor Sweep NEC Awards
CCSU will host the NEC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Stanley Quarter Park.
Chasing its ninth straight Northeast Conference Championship this upcoming weekend, the Central Connecticut men's cross country team swept the NEC weekly awards for the final week of tune ups before the title race on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, CT. The league awarded junior Austin Trainor and freshman Jonathan Gill on Tuesday afternoon as NEC Athlete and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for their standout performances at the 15th Annual CCSU Mini Meet last Friday.
The 2016 All-Conference runner earns his first weekly honor of the 2017 season following a second-place finish at CCSU's 5k home course, a race that also featured NEC members Fairleigh Dickinson and Bryant.
Navigating a field of 126 runners, Trainor crossed the finish line in 15:13.3 to help the Blue Devils take second place in the team standings behind only UMass.
Competing in his first varsity race at the collegiate level, Gill was a top-five finisher for a CCSU team that took second place in the team standings. Finishing in the top half of 126 entries, the Blue Devil rookie ran the 5K in 15:54.8.
On Saturday, the Northeast Conference Championships will begin at 11:00 a.m. The men will compete first followed by the women's cross country title race at noon. Check back later this week on www.ccsubluedevils.com and www.northeastconference.org for the latest championship info and updates.
