Men's Cross Country Takes Runner-Up at CCSU Mini Meet, Friday
Junior Austin Trainor placed second overall with a 5K time of 15:13.3.
The Central Connecticut men's cross country team recorded top finish as expected at its own 15th Annual Mini Meet at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, CT in second place out of 18 Division 1 schools. The Blue Devils were led by junior Austin Trainor who completed the 5K home course in an electric 15:13.3 as the individual runner-up. Central ended with a total team score of 91 points.
Sophomore Roberto Piotto who was found in the middle of the pack for majority of the race, kicked it into another gear in the final lap passing a number of runners to place fourth overall. Piotto's time as 15:15.6.
Next in for CCSU was junior Alex Norstrom who paced the field the beginning of the run only to finish in 20th with a time of 15:34.9. Sophomore Richard Grudzwick trailed Norstrom in 22nd place after clocking in at 15:36.4.
Rookie Jonathan Gill finished at 15:54.8, good for 43rd place overall. Sophomore Julio Arredondo and junior Kyle Welch conclude the men's varsity finishers with times of 16:22.6 and 16:34.7, respectively.
In the men's sub varsity race earlier, rookie Charlie Taubl placed eighth overall with a time of 16:00.00 and junior Adonys Langual came in at 16:45.4.
New Hampshire's Timothy Kenefick won the individual title with a time of 15:02.7 and Massachusetts won with 57 points.
The Central Connecticut men's cross country team will seek its nine straight NEC title next weekend back at Stanley Quarter Park for 2017 Northeast Conference Cross Country Championships beginning at 11:00 a.m. Check www.northeastconference.org and www.ccsubluedevils.com this week for the latest championship updated and news.
