Junior Ryan Hertzog and freshman Alex Norstrom of the Central Connecticut men's cross country team picked up NEC weekly awards after finishing first and second, respectively, and leading the Blue Devils to victory for the second consecutive year at the 13th Annual Ted Owen Invitational this past Saturday at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, CT. Hertzog was named the NEC Cross Country Co-Athlete of the Week and Norstrom was tabbed the NEC Rookie of the Week, the Northeast Conference front office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Hertzog, a Glenville, PA product, earned Co-Athlete of the Week honors after pacing the field of 84 runners at the Ted Owen Invitational and crossing the finish line first with a time of 25:44. His time was less than a minute off the 8K course record as he led Central to a first place overall team finish for the second-straight year. It marks the second Athlete of the Week honor for Hertzog in his career and he shares this one with Sacred Heart's Sean Ferguson, who won the Leeber Invitational on Saturday.
Norstrom picked up his third NEC Rookie of the Week award so far this season with a second place individual finish, clocking in a time of 26:29 on Saturday. The Coventry, CT native is a perfect three-for-three in NEC Rookie of the Week awards so far this year.
The Ted Owen Invitational featured 84 runners across 10 teams and was hosted by the Blue Devils at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, CT. CCSU won the meet for the second-straight season and third time in the past five years.
Hertzog, Norstom and the rest of the Central Connecticut men's cross country team will return to action next in two weeks when they head to Franklin Park in Boston, MA for the 2015 New England Championships.
