Bio

Katie Souviney begins her eighth season as the associate head coach for the men’s and women’s track and field teams. Souviney primarily works with hurdlers, sprinters, and jumpers. In addition, she has also coached the throwers five out her seven seasons at Central.

In 2014, Ronea Saunders ended her career under Souviney after racking up multiple NEC Championships, 2-time NCAA Preliminary Round qualifier, 2-time USA Indoor participant, USA Outdoor qualifier in the high jump, a U23 NACAC Competitor, and runner-up at USA Jr. Nationals as a freshman.

Since 2011, Souviney has added four NEC Conference Championships, and four NEC Coaching Staff of the Year awards (2014-16 men's outdoor; 2011 men's indoor) to her coaching track record. Her 2015 and 2016 women's indoor track teams finished their seasons with third place finishes in the NEC. 

Souviney's athletes have also been recognized by the NEC, awarding seven Player/Rookie of the Year accolades since 2012. 

During her Central Connecticut coaching campaign, Katie has been apart of six NCAA Preliminary Round Qualifiers in multiple events (sprints, jumps, throws), 14 NEC Champions, 3-Time USA Championship Qualifiers, and two USA Jr. National Championship Qualifiers. Most recently highlighting, Edwin Alston, who Souviney coached to the USA Jr. National Championship for the 110m hurdles. 

Among Alston, the associate head coach is acredited for training Jamal Fruster to multiple NEC Championships, and qualifying for the NCAA Preliminary Round in the 400m. As well as Rashad Williams, who was a 2-time NCAA Preliminary qualifier in men's shot put. Souviney's athletes have broken 39 school records. 

During her first season with CCSU, the men’s team won its first ever NEC Indoor Conference Title and the coaching staff was awarded Coaching Staff of the Year.  Her athletes broke four school records and Souviney had numerous athletes place at the conference meets. She also had one athlete qualify for the first round of the NCAA Championship. 

Prior to coaching at CCSU, Souviney spent two years coaching at the University of Maine.  In 2010, the Maine coaching staff was named America East Coaching Staff of the Year.  At Maine, Souviney was responsible for the recruitment and coaching of the hurdlers, high jumpers and multi event athletes.  During her two years coaching at Maine she coached athletes to thirteen All-Conference performances, eight All-New England performances, one school record, one USA Track and Field Junior National qualifier and forty two Top 10 Performances in UMaine history.

As a student-athlete Souviney served as captain of the Maine track team during her sophomore, junior and senior campaigns.  She held seven school records at UMaine (100m  hurdles, 60m hurdles, 60yd hurdles, pentathlon, heptathlon, 4x400m Relay and Sprint Medley Relay),  was a seven time All-America East Selection and qualified for the first round of the NCAA Championship in the 100m hurdles.  She was a recipient of the UMaine Scholar-Athlete award all four years of her career.

Souviney received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in exercise physiology from UMaine.  She currently holds a USTFCCCA Strength & Conditioning and Throws Specialist Certification, Level Two Coaching Certification in the jumps, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.
