Willis, Trainor Recognized by Northeast Conference on Tuesday Afternoon
Senior Jeremy Willis and junior Austin Trainor were tabbed NEC weekly awards for their performances at UConn and Mt. Sac last weekend.
Central Connecticut outdoor track and field members, senior Jeremy Willis and junior Austin Trainor, were acknowledged on Tuesday, April 18 for Northeast Conference weekly awards as announced by the league office. Willis was tabbed the Field Athlete of the Week, and Trainor earned the Co-Track Athlete of the Week honor for their accomplishments this past weekend at the UConn Northeast Challenge and at the Mt. Sac Relays.
Willis, the Teaneck, NJ native, became the second NEC javelin thrower to eclipse the 205-feet mark this season. The CCSU senior earned a bronze medal at the UConn Northeast Challenge by flinging the implement 62.52m (205' 1"). In addition to breaking the program record (61.25m) that Willis himself set at the 2015 NEC Championships, the Garden State product moved up to 20th place amongst automatic qualifiers for the IC4A Championships. In terms of NEC leaders, only Mount's Brian Sagendorf (64.50m) owns a better mark than Willis.
Trainor cut more than 14 seconds off his league-leading steeple chase time while contesting the Mt. Sac Relays in Torrance, CA. The third-year Blue Devil crossed the line in 9:06.66, exactly 2.0 seconds under the NEC Championship meet record set by former Olympian Brian Sell (SFU) in 2001. The Port Jervis, NY product's latest performance ranks seventh on the IC4A regional leader board.
Willis, Trainor and the rest of the CCSU men's outdoor track and field team will take on Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational this Friday and Saturday, April 21-23 at Weaver Stadium in Princeton, NJ. A select few will also be participating on Friday and Saturday in Atlanta, GA for the Georgia Tech Invitational at Morris Bryan Stadium.
