Alston and Piotto compete along with country's rising young track and field stars.
A pair of Central Connecticut men's track and field athletes competed at the 2016 USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships in Clovis, CA, on Friday. Freshman hurdler Edwin Alston and freshman distance runner Roberto Piotto both ran at the championships in an effort to qualify for the World Junior Championships.
Alston was in action in the 110 meter hurdles, running in the preliminaries. Alston clocked a time of 13.91, his best time of the year, to finish in fourth in his heat. His time was good enough to place 11th overall and missed qualifying for the finals by just .21 seconds.
Piotto closed the day by running in the 10,000 meter final. He turned in a time of 31:58.84 and placed 14th overall.
The meet, which features the country's rising track and field stars ranging in age from 14-19, will continue on Saturday and Sunday at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, CA. The top two competitors in each event that reach the world qualifying standard will move onto the IAAF World Junior Championships in Kazan, Russia, later this summer.
