Putman Wins High Jump, Gioiellli 800 Meter as Men Compete at Yale on Saturday
The CCSU men's indoor track and field team will return to action next Saturday at the Great Dane Classic in Staten Island, NY.
Senior Dashawn Putman jumped 1.99 meters and claimed first place in the high jump at the Yale Collegiate Invitational on Saturday at the Coxe Cage in New Haven, CT. Putman and junior Joseph Gioielli posted first place finishes as 10 Blue Devils finished in the top-five on the day. Gioielli placed first in the 800 meter with a time of 1:54.47.
Joining Putman and Gioielli inside the top-five at the Yale Collegiate Invitational was senior Matt Walker in the one mile run. Walker crossed the finish line with a time of 4:28.42 to earn a fifth place overall result.
A trio of Blue Devils finished in the top-five in the 60 meter hurdles. Freshman Edwin Alston led the way in his collegiate debut for CCSU posting a second place result by clocking in a time of 8.19 in the finals heat. He qualified for the finals after recording a time of 8.33 in the preliminaries. Fellow freshman Tyrik Henry finished right behind Alston in third place with a finals time of 8.27. Sophomore Tyler Latham follwed Henry in fourth place overall after crossing the finish line with a time of 8.30.
Central Connecticut picked up a top-five finish as a team in the 4x400 meter relay recording a third place finish. The team combined to finish with a total time of 3:24.86 to earn the result.
Putman earned the gold in the high jump after clearing 1.99 meters and freshman Amaziah Gadson cleared 1.94 meters in his collegiate debut to finish right behind Putman and earn the silver.
In the long jump, multi-even specialist Tyler Latham turned in a runner-up performance by leaping to 6.69 meters.
Rounding out the top-five finishers for the Blue Devils at the Yale Collegiate Invitational was Kwency Crittenden. The junior recorded a fourth place finish in the triple jump after leaping to 13.93 meters.
The CCSU men's indoor track and field team will return to action next Saturday at the Great Dane Classic in Staten Island, NY. The venue will also serve as the location for this season's Northeast Conference Championships Feb 19-20.
