Webster graduated with a degree in Physical Education from CCSU. He returned to CCSU as a teacher, track coach, and founder of the men's soccer program. He held the position of CCSU Freshmen Track and Cross-Country Coach in 1968 and CCSU Head Soccer Coach from 1969 until 1984. A highlight of his coaching career was hitting his 100th soccer victory vs. New Hampshire College in 1983.
Throughout his storied career, John was an influential educator and coach who served as mentor, role model, inspiration, and advisor to all who encountered him – players, students, and colleagues alike. The breadth and depth of his commitment to his career and family leaves behind many who were touched by his compassion, expectations, and encouragement.
John's legacy on and off the field resulted in his election to both the CCSU Athletic Hall of Fame and Connecticut State Soccer Hall of Fame. He was honored by the New England Track and Field Coaches Association and guest of honor, in 2000, at an event dubbed "John Webster Day" hosted by the CCSU Alumni Association. John retired from coaching in 1986 and teaching in 2003.
John passed after a valiant battle with neuroendocrine cancer on March 15, 2021. In memorial, this scholarship fund which will support the CCSU Men's Soccer Program, is being created by family and friends to honor his life's many accomplishments.
