Men's Soccer Outscores Saint Francis U, 5-3
The Blue Devils got goals from three players for their first NEC win of the year.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team connected for three second half goals in a 5-3 win over Saint Francis U on Sunday at CCSU Soccer Field. The Blue Devils got goals from three players, including two each from senior DeShawn Parker and sophomore Andres Muriel Albino.
The win was Central's first in Northeast Conference play this year and improved its record to 4-6-2 overall and 1-1 in league play.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring at the 3:34 mark when senior Ryan Taylor picked up the ball on the right wing and chipped his shot over the goalkeeper to the left side to make it 1-0.
The Red Flash would eventually tie the game just under 15 minutes into the game. Tulio Canineu sent a low cross from the left side that found the foot of Mario Mastrangelo cutting towards goal. Mastrangelo's shot found to the back of the net to make it 1-1.
CCSU would quickly respond when Albino picked up the ball outside the penalty area and dribbled to his left. He cut a shot back across to the right side of the goal that beat the keeper to make it 2-1 at the 14:56 mark.
SFU tied it before halftime when Troye Kiernan and Lucas Canineu worked a give-and-go in the penalty area and Canineu ripped a shot from 12 yards to make it 2-2.
The momentum of the game turned in CCSU's favor in the 52nd minute when SFU was awarded a penalty kick. Kiernan took the shot for the Red Flash, but senior Carson D'Ambrosio dove to his left to make the save and keep the game tied.
Central took the lead for good two minutes later when Albino sent a long pass ahead to Parker who put his shot to the right side past the keeper to make it 3-2.
The Blue Devils added to the lead at the 63:34 mark when junior Louis Beddouri collected a throw in deep in the SFU area and centered a pass to Albino who finished it of to make it 4-2.
At 68:50, Beddouri sent a long pass ahead to Parker who headed the ball by his man and then one-timed a shot from the left wing to make it 5-2.
The Red Flash scored a consolation goal with just under five minutes remaining when Christian Kirchhoff passed to Kyle Moershbacher in the CCSU area. Moershbacher put his shot to the right side to close out the scoring at 5-3.
It was the most goals scored by Central since a five-goal outburst against UMass at home on Sept. 6, 2015.
D'Ambrosio finished the day with five saves for Central as SFU held a slim, 16-15, edge in shots.
Central returns to action on Friday, Oct. 13, when it hosts LIU Brooklyn at 4:00 p.m.
