Men's Soccer Shuts Out FGCU, 2-0
Blue Devils go 2-0 and win the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team scored two goals in the second half to down FGCU, 2-0, on Sunday at the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic in Burlington, VT. Junior Louis Beddouri was named the tournament MVP and was one of four Blue Devils to earn All-Tournament honors.
The win was the second straight for CCSU and improved its record to 2-1 on the season. FGCU, which received votes in the latest College Soccer News poll, slipped to 1-3. Central won the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic by virtue of its two wins on the weekend.
Beddouri scored what would be the eventual game-winner, tapping in a low cross from senior Ryan Taylor in the 64th minute to make it 1-0.
Junior Sebastian Calderon tacked on a goal for Central at the 89:28 mark off a feed from sophomore Andres Muriel Albino for the final tally.
Senior Nick Velleca made five saves for the Blue Devils to collect the shutout against an FGCU squad that led the nation in goals last year. It was the first time Eagles have been held goalless since Oct. 13, 2015.
Beddouri was named the MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Albino and freshmen Filippo Pirola and Sean Gannon.
The Blue Devils return to action on Wednesday, September 6, with a 7:00 p.m. contest at Stony Brook.
