Men's Soccer Earns Northeast Conference Sportsmanship Award
NEC announced winners of NEC Sportsmanship Awards for the fall seasons.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team was named the winner of a 2016 Fall Team Sportsmanship Award it was announced by the Northeast Conference on Friday afternoon. The league announced team sportsmanship winners for each of the six fall sports.
The awards were instituted by league Presidents in 2008 and are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
"The Northeast Conference holds the principles of sportsmanship and pursuing victory with honor in the highest regard," said Noreen Morris, NEC Commissioner. "I applaud our student-athletes, coaches and fans for their commitment in this area, and congratulate those teams honored for their role in promoting the ideals and fundamentals of good sportsmanship."
The Blue Devils closed the 2016 season with an 2-12-3 record overall and had a pair of All-NEC honorees following the season. Senior Nick Velleca and freshman Andres Muriel Albino were both named to the All-NEC Second Team, while Muriel Albino was also selected to the All-Rookie Team.
