Men's Soccer Falls to UMass, 1-0, in Non-Conference Finale
Blue Devils will open Northeast Conference play Sunday at LIU Brooklyn.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team fell at Massachusetts, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon in Amherst, MA. The Minutemen scored the lone goal early in the second half and held off the Blue Devils for the shutout.
CCSU slips to 1-7-2 on the season, while UMass improves to 3-6-2 overall.
UMass scored just under 10 minutes into the second half when Ty Goncalves fed Henrey Steinkamp who placed his shot to the upper left corner from eight yards out.
The Blue Devils had a pair of corner kicks with just under 15 minutes to play, but were unable to find the tying goal.
The teams were tied 0-0 at halftime. Freshman Andres Muriel Albino had the first shot on goal in the seventh minute, but Jorge Becerra made the save. Senior Nick Velleca did his part to keep UMass off the scoreboard, making four saves in the opening period, including three in a five-minute span early in the opening period.
Velleca finished with six saves for Central, while Becerra made three stops. CCSU held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks, but UMass outshot CCSU, 15-9.
