Men's Soccer Falls to Canisius in Overtime, 2-1
Blue Devils host Manhattan on Wednesday.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team fell to Canisius, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday at CCSU Soccer Field. The Blue Devils' goal came off the foot of junior Ryan Taylor in the second half. CCSU's record slips to 0-4-2 on the season.
CCSU is back in action on Wednesday, September 21, when it hosts Manhattanat 7:00 p.m. on CCSU Soccer Field.
Central had its first really good chance just under 15 minutes into the game. Off a long throw-in, freshman David Bergstrom got the ball and took a shot that forced a sprawling save from Marco Trivellato.
Senior Nick Velleca played the first half for Central and made a pair of saves to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Early in the second half, Taylor had an opportunity for CCSU. He ran onto a ball behind the Canisius defense, but the goalkeeper rushed out to smother the opportunity.
Taylor's work payed off in the 52nd minute when he blocked a clearance attempt by the Canisius keeper and ran onto the loose ball, tapping it into an unattended net to make it 1-0.
Canisius tied the game just over six minutes later when Lucian Preis played a pass up the wing to Melvin Blair. Blair settled the ball and placed a dipping shot just under the crossbar to make it 1-1.
The Golden Griffins had a string of four straight corner kicks, which resulted in a chance for Alex Grattarola. His header off a cross deflected off the crossbar to keep the game level.
With just under 10 minutes to play a buildup by the CCSU attack led to a shot for freshman Andres Muriel Albino inside the box, but his shot was punched over the crossbar.
Canisius scored the winner just under three minutes into overtime off a corner kick. Matthew Santos' kick found the head of Grattarola who nodded the ball just inside the left pos past the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.
The Golden Griffins improved to 4-4 on the year.
Junior Carson D'Ambrosio made four saves in the second half for Central.
