Men's Soccer Shuts Out Sacred Heart on Sunday
Blue Devils travel to NJIT this Wednesday night for final non-conference game of season
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team improved to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in Northeast Conference play with a 1-0 shutout victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon in New Britain. The win is the fifth 1-0 shutout of the year for the Blue Devils. Senior goalkeeper Josef Abele made four saves in goal to earn his fourth victory of the year, all coming via the shutout.
The two teams played a scoreless first half with each producing just one shot on goal and one solid scoring opportunity.
For the Pioneers their best chance came early but a header went off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. For the Blue Devils it was a play later in the half that nearly produced a goal. Junior Freddy Metellus fed classmate Zach Zurita with a pretty feed at the left corner of the box and Zurita fired a shot that was stopped by Pioneer keeper Tucker Hackett.
The game remained scoreless until a solid offensive series by the Blue Devils with just under 12 minutes to play in the match. Freshman Filosmar Cordeiro gathered a ball on the left side of the field and fed senior Stephen Walmsley. Walmsey fed it back to Cordeiro just outside the keeper box and Cordeiro was taken down. Senior Keir Hannity converted the penalty kick to give the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead with 11:52 left. The goal was the fifth of the season for Hannity.
The Blue Devils will complete their non-conference schedule this Wednesday night on the road at NJIT beginning at 7 p.m.
