Taylor Scores in 1-0 Home Win for Men's Soccer
Blue Devils play on Wednesday night on the road at Hartford
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team used the play of a pair of freshman to score the lone goal in a 1-0 shutout home victory over the University of Vermont on Sunday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Josef Abele posted four saves in goal to record his third shutout of the season. With the victory the Blue Devils are now 4-3 overall on the season. Vermont is now 5-3-1 on the season with the loss.
The team's played to a scoreless first half with Vermont having a pair of scoring chances denied by Abele. Abele made three saves before the break. Vermont's Conor Leland had one save in the first half.
The game remained scoreless until freshman Ryan Taylor scored his second goal in the last three games. The goal gave the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead with just over 20 minutes to play in the second half.
Freshman Filosmar Cordeiro controlled the ball with some clever footwork just outside the right side of the goalkeeper box. He fed Taylor in front who had the short putback into the Vermont goal for the first score of the game for either team.
The action picked up following the Blue Devils goal in the second half. Central had an apparent goal nullified when the play was ruled offside. The Catamounts had a similar play only minutes later.
The Blue Devils also had a prime scoring chance stopped on the goalline by the Catamounts. After the goalkeeper had left the box, Cordeiro fired the ball towards the net but a Catamount defender headed it away to prevent the goal.
Abele ended the game with four saves to record his third shutout of the season. All four wins for the Blue Devils this year have come via the shutout, all by a 1-0 score.
The Blue Devils return to action on Wednesday night on the road at the University of Hartford at 7 p.m. They will play their next three matches on the road before returning home vs. Sacred Heart on Oct. 12 at 1 p.m.
