There were four qualifiers held around the state, with two of them being won by CCSU golfers. Incoming CCSU freshman Nick Piersall shot a +4 (76) in the opening round. Piersall qualified by winning the qualifier at Shuttle Meadow. Drew Aitken, a sophomore in the fall at CCSU, won the state qualifier at The Windham Club. He shot a +4 (76) in the first round on Monday.
Arthur Ouimet, who will be a sophomore in the fall, qualified at Shuttle Meadow. He shot an opening-round 74 to finish the first round at +2.
Two Blue Devil alumni are also competing. Dave Szewczul, a past champion in the event, finished the first round among the top 10 on the leaderboard after shooting a -1 (71). Monte Mullen is also among the field of 125 golfers.
The field of golfers will be trimmed to the top 32 following play on Tuesday. The low thirty-two players will advance to match play and it will take five wins in match play for the eventual champion to claim the Connecticut Amateur trophy.
