Men's Basketball Drops Close One at Stonehill

The Central Connecticut men's basketball team fell short at Stonehill on Saturday, dropping a 51-49 decision in Northeast Conference action in Easton, MA. The Blue Devils led for 32 minutes in the game, but the Skyhawks used a late run to take the lead late and hold on for the win.

Kellen Amos was the only Blue Devil to score in double-figures with 16 points. CCSU shot 19-of-52 (.365) from the field overall and 6-of-22(.273) from three-point range. Central was 5-of-9 (.556) from the foul line.

The Skyhawks had four players in double-figures led by Maxwell Zegarowski with 16 points. Stonehille shot 16-of-49 (.327) overall and 9-of-28 (.321) from the arc. The Skyhawks were 10-of-14 (.714) from the foul line.

The Blue Devils are off until they return home to host FDU on Saturday, Jan. 14.

KEY MOMENTS

• Central scored first for the third straight game, but as was the case all afternoon, they were unable to separate from Stonehill. Abdul Momoh would score the first four points for CCSU, but the lead would grow to no more than two points until a Jayden Brown jumper made it 11-7.
• Consecutive baskets from Andre Snoddy and Tre Breland pushed CCSU ahead 20-14 with just under four minutes left in the half. The Skyhawks would cut the deficit to 20-19 following a foul shot by Andrew Sims with 47 seconds to go in the half, but Snoddy made a trifecta to put the Blue Devils ahead 23-19 at the intermission.
• The Blue Devils maintained the lead for much of the second half. After a Davonte Sweatman jumper and an Amos three-pointer pushed the lead to 37-30, CCSU took its largest lead of the day following an alleyoop from Jay Rodgers to Amos with 8:21 remaining.
• Stonehill would respond by scoring 11 unanswered points and went ahead 44-41 with 4:47 to play following a Zegarowski trey. CCSU would tie the game at 47 on a three-pointer by Rodgers with 2:23 left, but Shamir Johnson sank a pair of foul shots after grabbing an offensive rebound with 0:50 to play and gave the Skyhawks the lead for good.

QUOTABLE

"Today was like a root canal, neither team could find a rhythm," said head coach Patrick Sellers. "Our guys fought against a good team on the road and we defended well for the most part, but Stonehill made some timely plays down the stretch."

• The teams met for the first time as members of the Northeast Conference. CCSU now leads the all-time series, 26-7.
• Amos scored in double-figures for a team-leading 14^th game this season.
• Abdul Momoh and Jay Rodgers added 9 and 8 points, respectively.
• Andre Snoddy finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Snoddy has led the Blue Devils in rebounding in four straight games and has at least seven bourds in the last five.
